Waverley Care: Moving Graphics

Illustration: Flexible methods

Illustrations can be produced in a range of styles, from linework to 3D-photorealistic illustration. We like to use a variety of methods to achieve the ‘look’ that a client desires. Using modern digital techniques as an enhanced way of creating artwork, TGIADD is not held back from creating - we just select the right tool for the job in hand.

Whether it is an illustration requiring the light touch of a water colour, or using 3D modelling environments for photorealistic ‘shots’- TGIADD has the abilities and tools to make it happen.

Recently one of our clients, Waverley Care - a charity that provides care and support to people living with HIV and Hepatitis C, went through the upheaval of moving offices. I was asked to design a 'moving office' postcard for distribution the many people and organisations that use Waverley Care's services and support. Inspiration was drawn from the ubiquitous packing box, and the rather elegant Georgian 'end terrace' that looked like a giant box itself.

Waverley Care's Marvin Mouse

Waverley Care's Marvin Mouse

In summer 2005 TGIADD were asked to create a 'New Yorker' style cartoon mascot to help launch an online shopping portal that benefits Edinburgh charity Waverley Care. The whimsical Marvin Mouse was the result, and was featured on a bookmark to publicise the portal.

Since then Marvin has appeared in some issues of Waverley Care's quarterly newsletter, Positive Interest, and 'starred' in five animated 'greeting cards' – Valentines Day 2006 and Christmas 2005–08.

Quantaq's SIM Characters

Quantaq desired a user-friendly and memorable image for its family of products for mobile phone SIM card developers. The initial brief was for SIM Detective, with the succeeding products being given a similar treatment. The SIM card figures were created as vector graphics, there by allowing the images to be easily repurposed from screen use to print.

Foreground: SIM Detective; Background (left to right): SIM Commander, SIM Explorer and SIM Assistant.

Recruiting firsthand volunteers

firsthand

Prior to 2005, child-sitting charity firsthand had used a mixture of professional two-tone cartoon-style illustrations and children's drawings in their annual reports, but from 2005 started using more colourful imagery after increased involvement with TGIADD. A range of illustrations have been developed - with neutral white backgrounds and a limited colour range to give a feeling of consistency and sense of integration across firsthand's services.

Some illustrations are associated with particular services, while most are more emotive of the activities that the charity's services enable and promote. These illustrations have been used in a range of marketing materials, and not just in annual reports, and examples of which can be seen in the 'Print' section of our website.
